Prof Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma

The hallmark of Professor Sharma’s research is focus on finding solutions to Defence Science Read More problems. His group was the first to publish a research postulation (DOI:10.22541/au.158567174.40895611) in March 2020 about repurposed 2-deoxy-D-glucose molecule in COVID therapy- giving its rationale and proof of concept based on in silico modeling, molecular simulation studies and safety considerations. The 2-deoxy-D-glucose (Patent Number 187908) has been commercialised to Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, and recently received the “Emergency Use Approval” by the Drug Controller General of India, for COVID. Also, discovered two new molecules viz., 3-O-β-D-galactopyranoside of quercetin (from Podophyllum hexandrum), & 1,3-Dicapryloyl-2-linoleoylglycerol (from Hippophae rhamnoides), and two microbes (an endophytic fungus – Trametes hirusta having a mycoryzzal association with the rhizomes of P. hexandrum) & a radioresistant bacterium Bacillus Sp. INM-1 (as a source of a semiquinone glucoside derivative) that holds promise for the bulk production of radioprotective drugs. Prof Sharma developed an innovative radiation decontamination formulation (Patent Number 339317), self-usable wipes (Patent Number 296996), and an Automated External Monitoring and Decontamination System (Patent Number 345672), for radiological contamination. A multi- insect repellent developed has been introduced in Defence and its pilot plant production technology (Patent No. 166260) has been licensed to a number of vendors.

Dr.Rudra Prakash Ojha

LETTER OF INTEREST I would like to take this opportunity to brief my academic, research and Read More administrative endeavor for your kind perusal. Current responsibilities: Presently, I am working as an Associate Professor, Dean-Faculty of Science and Director-Research at Nehru Gram Bharati Deemed University(NGBDU)(www.ngbv.ac.in),Prayagraj, U.P. My current job profile had equipped me with various academic, administrative and research experiences viz. six months research methodology course work (as per the UGC guidelines) for Ph.D., scholars, established Central Instrumentation facility (CIF), PG/UG classes, practical’s, seminars, organize conferences/webinars,to write project proposals for various funding agencies, to supervise Ph.D., (currently pursuing-04 and 06 Awarded) and M.Sc., dissertations (32 awarded). In addition, as of administrative endeavor; Coordinating Ph.D., program, research activities, appointed as a Centre Superintendent of University Semester and Annual Examination, member of Proctorial Board, Editorial board of university publishing wing and other Executive Committee of the University. Prior to joining NGBDU, I was employed as a Research Officer, in the Advanced Centre for Traditional and Genomic Medicine, Faculty of Ayurveda, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi and UC-Davis, California, USA under SASTRA-UC Davis Sandwich research program. At BHU, the multi-centric project was focused on to differentiate the age-related neurodegenerative disorder-Senile Dementia of Alzheimer’s type (SDAT) and Alzheimer’s disease among the human subject. The major objective of the project was to evaluate the impact of vitamin D and homocysteine on cognitive function. During the project, I was acquainted with EEG, Brain mapping to measure neuron density and P-300 used to measure event related potential. At UC-Davis, I got the opportunity to work under Prof. Gino Cartopassi, where mitochondrial mediated neurodegenerative disease was the major researchinterest along with exposure to advanced cutting-age-technologies including PET, SEM,TEM and NMR. Previous academic and research endeavor: Earlier, I worked as Asst. Professor-I in the School of Biotechnology, SASTRA University (www.sastra.edu), Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu and completed my Ph.D., in neuroscience. The primary objective of my doctoral research was to validate the efficacy profile and molecular mechanism of two Indigenous putative drug candidates viz; withanolides and curcuminoids over the MPTP mice model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). The doctoral research work involves multidisciplinary endeavor, includes various techniques in the area of biochemistry, pharmacology, phytochemistry, immunology, and histo-chemistry disciplines. The tested compounds were investigated on basic mechanistic pathways like oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation which plays key role in the disease progression and pathogenesis. The doctoral research findings suggested that withanolides possess immunomodulatory effect and curcuminoids exerted potent antioxidant and restoring mitochondrial impairment on the PD biomarkers and thus, confirmed their neuroprotective activity in pre-clinical studies for the treatment and management of PD. During the course of my doctoral research work, I have developed expertise in various techniques and methods including expression and purification of proteins using electrophoresis and immunoblotting, inflammatory cytokines, endogenous anti-oxidant enzymes, mitochondrial complexes and enzymes, qualitative and quantitative estimations of phytochemicals, Immunohistochemistry, Transmission Electron Microscopy (obtained training from NIMHANS, Bangalore, Karnataka), MPTP model development and behavioral assessment skills etc. Along with this, I have also presented my findings in several international and national conferences with young scientist award category nomination. Moreover, recipient of Young Scientist travel grant from AYUSH and DST Govt. of India, for the overseas paper presentation in Santa Barbara (CA) and Chicago (IL) USA, respectively, where my research findings were well received and included in media presentation under the public awareness program. In addition, our research team has published research findings in peerreviewed journals including, International Journal of Biogerantology, Neurochemical Research, Free Radical Research and Journal of Neuroimmune-pharmacology with cumulative Impact factor of more than29.5. Recently, we published collaborative research work in Nature Springer (Homocysteine metabolism in Health and Diseases). Apart from my doctoral research work, I have been involved in academic assignments, where I am accountable for B.Tech/M.Tech (Biotech) and M.Pharm classes and practical. I have also participated in the on-going research projects in the department. In my post- graduation dissertation work entitled “The study of cytokines in women infected with lower genital tract infections” at the Institute of Pathology, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR-New Delhi), I have been skilled in different techniques such as HIV screening by ELISA, basics of Flow-cytometry, ELISPOT, T-cell proliferation assays and RIA. I have also worked on the “Differential expression of Rb gene in human retinoblastoma cells”, in Dept. of Ocular Biochemistry, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. This project provided me the opportunity to develop an understanding of concepts of cancer biology whilst further improving my skills in molecular biology techniques such as Electrophoresis, 2D electrophoresis, Immunoblotting and collection of human subject test samples viz., aqueous and vitreous humor as well as scleroid tissues from the human eyeball and their primary cell line culture. Competency for the open post: With my previous academics and research endeavor of more than 15 years; I strongly believe that if given this opportunity; I will discharge the assigned duties of interest with utmost dedication. I will try to give emphasis over: To enrich Research and Academic curriculum of the University of High repute. To initiate and establish Advanced Bio-Medical Sciencefacility and Advanced Tribal Research Centre intended to extrapolate clinical observations/or virtual findings to the molecular level. The project proposals shall be further submitted to various funding agencies for grant. The major research thrust area will include; Tribal welfare and Health program intended to Socio-Economic-Development, toinitiate the innovative and inclusive research onbiomarkers for various diseases, impact of meditation over cognitive function and stress/depression, effect of long term use of non-ionizing radiation (mobile phone) on cognitive function of young population. (Dr. Rudra P. Ojha)
