My Biography

Dr. Sunil K. Arora did his M.Sc. (Hons School) in More Biochemistry from PU, Chandigarh in 1980 and Doctoral degree (PhD) in Immunology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh, India in 1987. He received his post-doctoral training in Molecular Immunology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas USA. He was elevated to full Professor in 2008 and retired on 30th Sept., 2023. He remained as Head, Department of Translational & Regenerative Medicine at PGIMER Chandigarh, from 2013 till his retirement. He is elected member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) since 2004. He was Professor-in-charge of HIV Diagnosis and Disease Monitoring. His research work focused on the Immunological aspects of Infectious Diseases mainly HIV, HIV-TB co-infection, HCV and Experimental Leishmaniasis. His team has worked on identification and evaluation of protective efficacy of novel vaccine candidates for kala azar. His lab has been working to understand the cellular immune defects in HIV and HCV infections and role of cancer stem cells in breast carcinoma and immunomodulatory-cum-regenerative capacity of mesenchymal stem cells. He has guided 25 PhDs to completion with 179 scientific publications to his credit in the peer-reviewed journals of repute. He has received many awards including Indo-US Young Investigator’s award in 1991, Indo-US Fogarty Fellowship in 2012 and Senior Scientist Oration award in Immunology in 2018.
